We stand with Ukraine and say no to war

Magnesia Litera 2026

Velice gratulujeme Petru Pokornému (Laboratoř archeobotaniky a paleoekologie) a Petru Šídovi k vítězství v letošní soutěži Magnesia Litera v kategorii naučná literatura za knihu Hinterland: Archeologie severočeských pískovcových krajin.

We warmly congratulate Petr Pokorný (Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Palaeoecology) and Petr Šída on their victory in this year’s Magnesia Litera Awards in the Non-fiction category for their book Hinterland: Archaeology of the Sandstone Landscapes of Northern Bohemia.

The book addresses the postglacial development of the landscape and the mutual relationship between nature and human society, combining approaches from traditional disciplines such as ecology, botany, archaeology, and Quaternary geology. Understanding how past events and processes have shaped the present can help us better interpret current environmental changes and, in particular, inform our approach to nature conservation. Based on thousands of years of Holocene development described in the book, the authors conclude that nature and landscapes have always changed, are changing, and will continue to change; that the Central European landscape has been co-shaped by humans for many millennia; and that the key to maintaining biodiversity has been—and continues to be—a diverse mosaic in which each part of the landscape may differ in form and function. It therefore makes little sense to seek a single “correct” solution.
