(Mis)understanding(,) idealisation and truth: a critique of Angela Potochnik

ABSTRACT: Angela Potochnik’s new book ‚Idealization and the Aims of Science‘ makes some bold claims about the traditional ways in which philosophy of science has understood the practice and the goals of science. According to her, in particular, idealization is prevalent and undispensable, so that the idea that science proceeds by substituting idealized models and theories by less idealized ones is false. Because of this fact, she claims that truth is not the epistemic objective of science; the real goal is, instead, understanding. In this talk, I criticize both claims, first by showing that Potochnik’s understanding of ‚idealization‘ fails to grasp some of its essential features, and second by showing that understanding and truth are not as different goals as Potochnik assumes.
