Depending on the extent of corrosion damage to archaeological finds (especially iron items), an X-ray surface is first carried out to determine the condition of the metal core, possible damages, or surface treatments. Based on the X-ray survey, a conservation intervention is then carried out. It includes detailed photographic documentation, cleaning of the find from soil residues, partial removal of corrosion products with regard to preserving the surface treatments, desalination, consolidation, stabilization\/passivation, application of a protective layer, and adjustment. The total length of conservation depends mainly on the degree of corrosion products, the concentration of which must be reduced by means of desalination, taking up to several weeks. The indicated times are indicative only.
