Conservation of Archaeological Findings from Base and Precious Metals

We provide conservation services for archaeological artefacts made of base and precious metals.

Services include:

  • Detailed photographic documentation of the artefacts (before, after, and during intervention)
  • X-Ray Fluorescence measurement (400 CZK without VAT per measurement)
  • Cleaning of artefacts and desalination
  • Stabilization/Passivation of corrosion
  • Consolidation and fixation of surface layers
  • Conservation
  • Adjustment

We offer conservation for:

  • Iron artefacts
  • Artefacts made of copper alloys (bronze, brass)
  • Artefacts made of silver and gold alloys
  • Artefacts made of tin and lead alloys
  • Artefacts made of composite materials (metal and glass, wood, textile, leather)

Conservation is possible for both already prepared objects and objects picked up in the in-site block. Depending on the extent of corrosion damage to archaeological finds (especially iron items), an X-ray surface is first carried out to determine the condition of the metal core, possible damages, or surface treatments. Based on the X-ray survey, a conservation intervention is then carried out. It includes detailed photographic documentation, cleaning of the find from soil residues, partial removal of corrosion products with regard to preserving the surface treatments, desalination, consolidation, stabilization/passivation, application of a protective layer, and adjustment. The total length of conservation depends mainly on the degree of corrosion products, the concentration of which must be reduced by means of desalination, taking up to several weeks. The indicated times are indicative only. The output of conservation is also a conservation report, which contains a description of all survey and steps of conservation intervention for each artefact.
