INVESTIGATIONS OF THE NEOLITHIC MINING AND PRODUCTION AREA AT JISTEBSKO

This unique archaeological area was discovered in 2002 and since then, the initiator of the excavation has intensely engaged in its investigation. Remains of Neolithic mining pits and production districts have been preserved there in an area of more than 25 hectares. The area used during the Neolithic period had even been larger, but a significant part of it was destroyed due to later (especially medieval) activities (field systems, meadows, and charcoal kilns). The beginnings of use of the local raw material date back to the Boreal Mesolithic, and the development of mining started at around 5500 BC. Mining then ceased in the Late Neolithic period, in the chronological horizon of the Stroked Pottery culture (4900 BC). Semi-finished polished axes were produced directly on site and then distributed over a distance of up to 600 km in the peak period.
